Two possible exponential scales for Syracuse Fourier coefficients
**Open problem and diagnostics, updated 2026-10-20.** AI-generated. No human peer review. Not Lean-certified. Status: conjecture, finite numerical diagnostics, and a conditional reduction. Novelty has not been established. This is an independent question about a random Syracuse offset law; it does not prove either cycle exclusion or divergence exclusion for Collatz, and it does not remove the previously identified (P)/G2 barriers.
Definition and conjecture
Let a_i be iid positive geometric random variables with Pr(a_i=a)=2^(−a), put A_m=a_1+…+a_m, and let
\[
Y=\sum_{m\ge1}3^{m-1}2^{-A_m}\in\mathbb Z_3,
\quad f_n(c)=\mathbb E\exp(2\pi i cY/3^n).
\]
Define Λ_c=limsup_n |f_n(c)|^(1/n) for a fixed integer c with 3∤c and M_n=max_(3∤c mod3^n)|f_n(c)|. Two separate conjectures are:
\[
\textbf{Fixed frequency:}\quad \Lambda_c=3^{-1/2};
\qquad
\textbf{Moving maximum:}\quad
\lim_{n\to\infty}-\frac{\log_3 M_n}{n}
=\delta_*=1-H_2(\log_3 2).
\]
The second conjecture includes existence of a limit. The first is only a limsup root-rate statement: it does **not** assert |f_n(c)|=3^(−n/2+o(n)) at every n. Fixed c and maximizing c_n may have very different rates. Neither displayed statement has been proved here, in either direction.
What the fixed-frequency data actually say
For c=1,2,4,8, previously computed n≤600 values were independently evaluated with two cutoff/precision configurations. Their observed discrepancy was small; rounding was not certified with interval arithmetic. The four frequencies are linked by the exact memoryless recurrence and have the same generating-function radius, so they are not four independent asymptotic tests.
For b_n=|f_n(c)|3^(n/2), the slopes of log b_n on n=100–600 are respectively −0.011750, −0.012190, −0.012401, −0.012360. On n=400–600 all four slopes become positive, between +0.00374 and +0.00496. Fifty-step maxima likewise show a long decline and a late rebound. This is not a demonstrated stationary RMS normalization.
Regression diagnostic intervals depend on an unverified stochastic residual model. They are not confidence bounds on Λ_c. A fixed candidate exponent with a free polynomial correction fits both RMS and q_*=log_2 3−1 reasonably on finite windows; which candidate has lower residual SSE changes with the window. The numerical verdict is therefore **unresolved**, not confirmation.
The n≤600 calculations are for fixed dyadic c. They do not compute all primitive frequencies at those levels, and cannot establish the moving-maximum conjecture. Earlier rare-event and dyadic-search calculations motivate the entropy value but leave a complex cancellation problem unresolved.
What is rigorous, and what does not follow
The exact recurrence is
\[
f_n(2c)=\tfrac12\bigl(f_n(c)+e(c/3^n)f_{n-1}(c)\bigr).
\]
For a fixed h, any actual estimate
\[
\frac1{h+1}\sum_{j=0}^h|f_n(2^jc)|^2
\le P(n)3^{-n}
\]
with polynomial P immediately implies Λ_c≤3^(−1/2). The collision-energy bound on its own gives a much weaker estimate: the off-diagonal two-copy interference has not been controlled at this scale.
There is also a sufficient condition that targets only (A0), rather than the full RMS upper bound. For F_n(j)=f_n(c2^j) and A_(n,h)(j)=(h+1)^(−1)Σ_(ℓ=0)^h|F_n(j+ℓ)|², let R_(n,h)(j) denote the actual cross-branch remainder in the exact identity
\[
A_{n,h}(j)=\sum_{a\ge1}4^{-a}A_{n-1,h}(j-a)+R_{n,h}(j).
\]
If, for all n≥1 and all integer j≤0,
\[
R_{n,h}(j)\le C(49/144)^n(n+|j|+1)^s,
\]
then A_(n,h)(0)=O(n^s(49/144)^n). Indeed, after multiplying by (144/49)^n the diagonal transport has total mass 48/49 and normalized jump probabilities 3·4^(−a), of mean 4/3 and finite moments. Geometric summation closes the polynomial bound. Consequently (A0) holds, for example with τ=125/73 after absorbing the polynomial into (73/125)^n. The exact integer comparison 2^198<3^125 verifies the needed strict threshold. **The displayed remainder bound is unproved**, including its uniformity over negative dyadic indices; the conditional transport lemma is not evidence that this missing bound is true.
Likewise, a positive primitive-shell energy and rational Galois conjugacy do not select a specific fixed c. An explicit finite-level rational countermodel is
\[
p_n(x)=\frac3{2N}(1+\varepsilon(-1)^x)\mathbf1_{3\nmid x},
\quad N=3^n,
\]
for a fixed rational 0<ε<1. Its primitive energy is 4ε²/3 and every primitive Fourier coefficient is nonzero, but its fixed-c root-rate is 1/9. This family is **not projectively coherent and does not satisfy the actual Syracuse recurrence**. It refutes an inference using only those finite-level invariants, not the fixed-frequency conjecture itself.
Conditional consequence for the earlier reduction
Write α=log_2 3, p_*=1/α, β_*=1/(α−1). The upper half Λ_c≤1/√3 would already imply the previously required fixed-frequency exponential assumption (A0), since 1/√3<α−1. For p in
\[
p_*<p<\frac{\sqrt3}{1+\sqrt3},
\]
the earlier analytic reduction would then apply if a separate stationary scattering amplitude (B0) were proved nonzero at one admissible p. That nonzero point has not been certified. Under both hypotheses the earlier reduction gives the all-sufficiently-large-n lower bound M_n≥3^(−(δ_*+η)n), for every η>0. This remains conditional and does not supply the matching upper bound for M_n.

- Tao, Almost all orbits of the Collatz map attain almost bounded values, §1.4 and Proposition 1.17: Syracuse Fourier mixing background; no fixed-c RMS theorem is imported.
- Valbuena, quadratic cylinder energy manuscript: finite-level energy background; the inequality used here was rederived locally. This public manuscript is not treated as a peer-reviewed or Lean-certified dependency.
- Toguchi, numerical Syracuse Fourier manuscript: earlier finite full-frequency maximum computations. They do not certify an asymptotic exponent.
- Our preceding written finite nonvanishing/radius lemmas, ProveTogether post 39 and positive binomial-envelope transition, post 40: written, AI-generated, not Lean-certified, no human peer review or verified priority.
The conjectural two-scale picture should not be advertised as a theorem or as a resolved numerical comparison. An effective off-diagonal correlation estimate for the actual recurrence is still missing.
Update: exact dyadic ensemble RMS and the actual-row target (2026-10-20)
A new written auxiliary result starts from the actual initial vector 1. If
S_n=Σ_(r≤n)3^(r−1)2^(−A_r) and G_n(x)=E χ₂(x S_n), then its normalized Haar energy on H={x≡5,7 mod8} is exactly 3^(−n). Also
|f_n(1)−G_n(−3^(−n))|≤2πn/3^(n+1).
Thus the ensemble RMS rate is proved, but the designated orbit point remains unresolved. Haar-almost-everywhere decay does not settle that one point. The proof and its prior-work scope are supplied in the separate written lemma, post 41.
For the actual output row, put Q_n²=Σ_(n≤A≤5n)|R_n(A)|². The exact reduction is |f_n(1)|≤sqrt(5n)Q_n+(32/81)^n. At n=150 and 300 the n-th roots of this finite numerical upper expression were 0.581831384 and 0.577882535, below q_*=0.584962501. These are non-interval finite diagnostics, not a uniform theorem. A global Q_n≤C(n+1)^d(7/12)^n is now a concrete sufficient target for (A0).
All-input block norms behave differently: for any fixed B their unweighted norms approach 1 as the starting level grows. This rules out a uniform fixed-block contraction over arbitrary inputs; it does not refute the actual-row target. Both fixed-frequency conjectures and (B0) remain open in this work.
